Sinusitis (inflammation of a nasal sinus) is one of the most common long-term illnesses in the United States. It affects approximately 14 percent of the population at some point in the year. Causes of Sinusitis
Sinusitis (inflammation of the sinus chambers) is typically caused by a virus when affected by the common cold. Boosting your immune system will help to combat this problem directly by stimulating the immune system and making it more difficult for the virus to attack the cells.

What Are Sinuses?
The sinuses are a connected system of hollow cavities in the skull.
The Sinus Cavities include:
- The maxillary sinuses (the largest), in the cheekbones
- The frontal sinuses, in the low-center of the forehead
- The ethmoid sinuses, between the eyes at the nasal bridge
- The sphenoid sinuses, in bones behind the nasal cavity
The sinuses are lined with soft, pink tissue called mucosa. Normally, the sinuses are empty except for a thin layer of mucus. If the tissue becomes irritated, inflammation is typically the allergic response of the body which increases mucus in the chambers. When mucus and inflammation become great, mild to severe pain follows.
Middle ear infections can be exacerbated by:
- Enlarged Adenoids
- Common Cold
Inflammation can block the Eustachian tube that drains mucus from the middle ear. The inner ear is the connection between the throat and middle ear that equalizes pressure. The Eustachian tube is typically closed but when pressure needs to be equalized, yawning, chewing gum or swallowing can help open the Eustachian tube thus normalizing pressure. People who fly in airplanes, swim or scuba dive can understand the importance of equalizing the pressure fast. But when inflammation is present these actions may not help the situation because the Eustachian tube is forced closed, not allowing equalization to take place.
